I don’t think it would be considered Christmas if those things were taken away. Opening presents on Christmas morning is always fun, but checking out what Santa left in the stocking, now that can be a whole other adventure. Top 10 Classic Toys

By : Scott Magee

We’ve all had our favorite toys as children. You know those toys you just couldn’t leave home without or the toy that needed to be played with at least 5 times a day. We here at www.ThinkFastToys.com have chosen our Top 10 Classic Toys. It’s been fun researching the toys that were listing, and we hope you enjoy recalling some of your favorite toys.

Top 10 Classic Toys

1.  4x4 Rubik's Cube The Rubik’s Cube - Originally invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and Professor of Architecture, Erno Rubik. The Rubik’s Cube won the 1980 German Game of the Year Award, a special award for the Best Puzzle. To date, over 350 million cubes have been sold internationally, making it the world’s top selling puzzle game. It is also widely thought of as the world’s best selling toy.

2.  100th Anniversay Etch A Sketch The Etch A SketchInvented in the latter part of the 1950’s, the Etch A Sketch hit the shelves just in time for the 1960 holiday season. The Etch A Sketch was introduced during the peak of the Baby Boom era and is known for being one of the best known toys of that generation. In 2003, the Toy Industry Association named the Etch A Sketch to the ” Century of Toys List”, which commemorates the 100 most memorable and most creative toys of the 20th century.

3.  Classic Slinky in Retro Box The Slinky -Invented and developed by a naval engineer, the Slinky came to life in the early 1940’s and was successfully demonstrated at the popular Gimbels department store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the fall of 1945. Since that time, over 300 million Slinky’s have been sold. In 2003 the Slinky was named to the Toy Industry Association’s “Century of Toys List”, which commemorates the 100 most memorable and most creative toys of the 20th century.

4.  Erector Speed Play Helicopter Erector SetsInvented in 1911, the Erector Set is believed by many to have been the subject of the first national advertising campaign in the United States for a toy. It has remained relevant in the toy building world even with competition from rival toy building sets. Every kid has owned or played with an Erector Set, including most kids’ parents or grandparents. This allows the Erector Set to bring generations together for a truly fun and unique building experience.

5.  Star Wars Mr. Potato Head Mr. Potato HeadInvented and developed in 1949, Mr. Potato Head was first manufactured and distributed by Hasbro in 1952. Mr. Potato Head was also the very first toy advertised on television in 1952 and over 1 million products were sold that year, leading the company to expand and add a Mrs. Potato Head to the line in 1953. In 2000, Mr. Potato Head was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame located at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

6.  icon Hot Wheels & Matchbox CarsI know the purist may get upset that these two brands were combined. So please know that I didn’t do it out of disrespect to either brand, but more to the fact that I grew up playing with both brands. I wasn’t picky when mom said to grab a toy, and whichever car that day tickled my fancy, I had her buy. Hot Wheels were introduced by American toy maker Mattel in 1968 and Matchbox were introduced in 1953 by the now defunct U.K. toy company Lesney Products. After a few different owners, in 1997 Mattel purchased the toy division from Tyco Toys and Matchbox ended up being owned by the same company that owned the Hot Wheels brand. They both are now, in our opinion, an American Toy Classic.

7.  Deluxe Collector Marble Set MarblesThe game of marbles has been around for centuries, having been mentioned in Roman Literature, and there were also many examples of marbles from ancient Egypt. Most commonly they were made of clay, stone or glass. The first mass produced marbles in the U.S., were made of clay and produced in the early 1890’s. Marbles is an extremely simple game to learn and can involve 2-6 players at once, making it fun for the whole family.

8.  Wooly Willy Original Wooly WillyThis toy owns one of the oddest names and at first glance, you might not remember it, but every kid has owned at least one Wooly Willy in their life. Wooly Willy is the toy that uses metal filings and a magnetic wand to make various facial hairs on a static face. They hit the toy market in 1955 and they are still in mass prodcution today. In 2003, the Toy Industry Association named Wooly Willy to it’s “Century of Toys List”, which commemorates the most memorable and creative toys of the 20th century.

9.   The Yo-YoYo-Yo’s were first made popular in the 1920’s and are still hugely popular with both children and adults today, but the earliest Yo-Yo to date is from 500 BCE. To us, a toy that can last over centuries, rightly deserves to be on this list. With many great brands and styles of Yo-Yo’s being produced, this is one toy that can keep you and the little ones occupied for hours.

10.  40pc American Soldier Set Little Green Army MenWe know these might be an odd choice for this list, but if you really think about it, what kid hasn’t played with some sort of little green army man? Plastic army men are widely available across the United States and have been sold since the early part of the 1950’s. With imagination play on top of many parents list for their children, these were easily brought to mind. They are great for sandboxes, the floor or wherever your imagination leads you.

That’s it!! After much debate, the list for the Top 10 Classic Toys is now official. Make sure you take a minute to check out each one of these great toys on our list at ThinkFastToys.com. Not only are they fun to play with, they will bring back some awesome childhood memories. We had a great time tracking down our all-time favorite Top 10 Classic Toys, and we hope you have enjoyed reading and reminiscing.

How To Build A Kite

By : Scott Magee

Kite Flying is loads of fun and a great way to spend a windy afternoon with your family at the beach or in your local park. It’s also super easy to build your own kite with some items that you can find from around your home or your local craft store. We will break down into easy steps, How To Build a Kite.

images.jpg

Things You’ll Need :

  1. Paper or Plastic Bag
  2. Dowel Rods or sticks
  3. Ruler or Yardstick
  4. Strong Construction Paper
  5. Knife
  6. Glue
  7. Ribbon
  8. String

Getting Started :

Make sure that you have an adult to help in the building of your kite, safety first!! Once you’ve got all of your accessories together, were ready to begin building your kite.

  1. Cut your dowels or sticks so that one is 20 inches long and the other is 24 inches long.
  2. Use your knife to cut notches into the ends of each stick on both sides.
  3. On the shortest of your 2 sticks, mark off a point in the middle, which should be 10 inches from the end. On the larger stick, measure 6 inches from the end.
  4. Next, make a cross with the 2 sticks by matching them at the marks. The notches at the end of the sticks should be running parallel to the ground when laid on your working surface.
  5. With your string or twine, bind the 2 sticks together by wrapping the string around the center in an “X” pattern. Repeat this step until it feels sturdy.
  6. Next we will wrap the string through the notches, making a diamond.
  7. Tie the string off at the center of your diamond, but not before repeating your “X” pattern one more time. Make sure that your string is pulled tight and not sagging.
  8. Cut your kites material ( paper or bag ) slightly larger than the kite frame.
  9. Place your kite material over the string frame and neatly fold the edges over the rim. Once completed, it’s a good idea to tape or glue the edges together, providing extra strength for your kite. Reinforcing the top and bottom of the kite at this point is also a good idea.
  10. Next you will cut 2 small holes, one should be at the top and the other at the bottom of the kite.
  11. Run a 2ft portion of string through the top hole and tie that piece off. Next run the rest of the string through the bottom hole and tie it off. This will become your bridle.
  12. Next, attach the remainder of your string to the center of your bridle. This will become your flying string.
  13. Your last step is to use the construction paper or any other creative tool to decorate your now finished kite.

That’s it!! Now get out there and “go fly a kite” !!!

Free Plastic Flamingo Fundraiser Guide

Filed under: Free Stuff, Fundraising Ideas — ThinkFastToys.com @ 9:49 am on October 13, 2009

A ‘Kinder, Gentler’ and Decidedly Kitschy Fundraising Idea!

Free Plastic Flamingo Fundraiser GuideRaising money in tough economic times just got a little easier…and a lot more fun.

While non-profit organizations across the country have been hit as hard as anyone by the current economy, one sure-fire solution has emerged.

It’s the Yard Flamingo Fundraiser.

Here’s how it works. Using a church youth group or Boy Scout troop as an example, have your pastor, priest or rabbi announce in the bulletin that a Yard Flamingo Fundraiser is about to take place.

Under cover of darkness – or in broad daylight if you’re more daring and brazen – your group plants a flock of plastic pink flamingos in the front yard of an unsuspecting member of the congregation along with a note explaining what your group is raising money for and stating that in exchange for a small donation, (either at a per-bird rate or a whole flock fee of perhaps of $15-20), the foul fowl will be removed. For a somewhat larger donation, the flocking “victim” can name the next member of the congregation to be flocked and so on and so on.

Some particularly enterprising Yard Flamingo Fundraisers have even pre-sold “flocking insurance policies” in exchange for upfront donations of $10-15.

The sky is the limit! A flock of 60 birds, earning just $10 a day for three weeks, could raise over $12,000!

These pink plastic icons of 1950’s kitsch are proving to be incredibly persuasive and hilariously effective at raising money for scout troops, church groups, social clubs and service organizations coast to coast. Not even Vito Corleone is an intimidating as a flock of flamingos on a well-kept suburban lawn.

You don’t have to get fleeced building your flock, either! Certain online outlets such as ThinkFastToys.com offer FREE SHIPPING on all orders over $49.99, so a case lot of 24 birds with a fundraising potential in the thousands can be yours for less than $90!

Everyone is fair game for a Yard Flamingo Fundraiser! Aside from your neighbors and members of your congregation, there are doctors, lawyers, realtors, dentists and local elected officials who can all be good targets for this lighthearted, kitschy twist on the fundraising game.

How To Play Jacks

By: Scott Magee

How to Play JacksOne of my fondest memories as a child, was of myself and my grandfather playing games. It could be as simple as “I spy” or a little harder, like monopoly. Either way, for me it was time well spent with my grandfather. A game he taught me early on, was the game of “Jacks”. He would tell me stories of how he and his brother would play as children, years before video games. What I would like to do is to take this great game and break It down into simple steps, so that you or anyone else could easily play.

Things You’ll Need to Play

  1. One (1) small rubber ball
  2. Ten (10) metal or plastic jacks
  3. A flat, level playing surface

Getting Started

We always played on the ground or in the driveway (away from danger), in a spot where the ball would bounce the best . If you want to play inside, a table or hard surface would be okay.

  1. Player One (1) tosses the jacks onto the playing surface.
  2. Player One (1), then bounces the ball on the surface and with the same hand that they bounced with, they will pick up 1 jack before the ball bounces for a 2nd time.
  3. One thing you should ALWAYS remember about the game of Jacks, is that it is played with just one of your hands at ALL times. This keeps the game interesting. It should be noted that if any player fails to pick up the set amount of jacks in any round, that player forfeits his turn and then it becomes player 2’s turn to play the game.
  4. This process is repeated on each players turn, but increasing the number of Jacks picked up on each single bounce.
  5. Once player 1 has collected all 10 jacks, pass the ball and jacks over to the second player and then repeat the process again.

When it becomes a players 2nd turn, that player will begin where they had previously left off. For instance, if player 1 failed to pick up 5 jacks on 1 bounce in the first game, they will begin their 2nd try at attempting to pick up 5 jacks.

In Jacks, a winner is the person who can complete a “onesie”. This is when all 10 Jacks have been collected successfully in one hand, on one bounce of the ball and during the tenth completed round. You will gain great hand and eye coordination from playing this game. Learning How To Play Jacks can be great fun. I had a lot of fun playing and I hope you do too.

How To Play Marbles

By: Scott Magee

How to Play MarblesIn researching this article, I found there were many more ways on how to play the game of Marbles than I originally played as a child. There were games such as Long Tawl, The Cherry Pit and Ring Taw. All those other marble games seem fun, but I’m going to focus on one type of game. The time old tradition of Ringer. The object of the game is simple. Gather your friends, draw a circle on the ground, spill the marbles into the circle and try to knock out the most with your “Shooter”. Collect the marbles you knocked out and the player with the most marbles at the end, will win the game.

Things You’ll Need to Play

  1. Marbles
  2. Sidewalk or regular chalks
  3. String on a stick (to draw a nice accurate playing circle). String should be about 6 – 10 feet in length
  4. A flat, level playing surface
  5. 2 to 6 players

Getting Started

The cool thing with marbles, is that you can play on dirt, a sidewalk or a nice hard floor in the comfort of your home. Choose the area that suits you and then its game time. You should also choose how your going to play the game, whether it be for “fair” (you keep your marbles) or for “keepsies” (you lose your marbles).

  1. Clear your playing area of any debris, so your playing surface will be as smooth as possible.
  2. Take the string and stick and attach a piece of chalk. Plant the stick in the ground and draw out a nice 6-10 ft. playing circle. For inside play use the string to make your circle (no chalk, mom will be super mad).
  3. Inside your circle you can scatter your marbles, place them in the shape of a plus sign or set them in a circle pattern.
  4. Choose which player shoots first and begin your game.

How to Play MarblesPlayers can shoot the marbles inside the game ring from anywhere outside of the circle. The player must have at least one ( 1 ) of their knuckles touching the ground. This method is called “Knuckling Down”. You want to use the larger marble as your “Shooter” and the smaller marbles as your “Targets”. You shoot your marble by flicking the marble out of your fist with your thumb.

  1. The player can shoot at any marble or marbles inside the game ring.
  2. Gather the marbles that you knock out of the ring . If you knock any marbles out of the ring, shoot again. If you do not shoot any marbles out or your “Shooter” goes outside of the game ring on a shot, let the next player take their turn.
  3. Continue this method until all the marbles have been shot and collected and the ring becomes empty.

It’s most important to remember that it’s just a game and to make sure you have a lot of fun!

  6. ATTACH: Attach a bridle and string. Cut a 6 foot length of line and tie each end to one of the punched out bridle holes. Tie a loop to the very center of the line. Attach flight line to the loop.
  7. TAIL: Add a tail if the wind is moderate to strong.

FLYING YOUR KITE: With the wind at your back, have a friend hold the kite overhead about 20 feet downwind. Holding the line tight, signal your friend to release the kite into the air. Pull the string hand over hand until the kite gains altitude, then let-out line so the kite can climb in the sky! NEVER FLY A KITE NEAR POWER LINES OR IN STORMY WEATHER!
